Aug. 4 practice blog

May have to add Jon Crucitti’s name to the depth chart at punter.

Crucitti, a sophomore, who was a slotback last season and is working with the first-team wide receivers early in training camp, booted a high 45-yard punt in practice. He was an all-state punter at West Rowan (N.C.) High as a senior, averaging 41.7 yards per punt.

Army lost two-year starter Jonathan Bulls to graduation. Senior Kolin Walk and junior Chris Boldt are listed as the only punters on Army’s roster and they have not attempted a punt in a game.

Junior starting defensive end Jarrett Mackey was back to full speed.

Coach Rich Ellerson on wide receiver Austin Barr sitting out the start of training camp with an undisclosed injury: “It’s just baby steps. I told him his goal is to be full speed in September, not August.”

Junior Jared Hassin was getting freshmen fullbacks Larry Dixon and Brady Earnhardt up to speed and prepared after walkthroughs of full-contact drills, which start Friday. Dixon was running second string behind Hassin.

Sophomore Anthony Stephens made a nice catch near the sidelines from junior quarterback Trent Steelman. Steelman lofted a pass over cornerback Antuan Aaron and into the hands of Crucitti.

Josh Jackson, Jordan Crockett and freshman Lamar Johnson-Harris had interceptions in drills against freshmen quarterbacks.

Junior defensive end Shola Mustapha accidentally ran into quarterback Max Jenkins during an Army vs. Army drill and rovers coach John Brock reminded Mustapha, “Do not touch the quarterback.”

Senior rover Josh Jones hasn’t been cleared to run yet after recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in spring practice. Ellerson said Jones’ return could be, “mid-season at the earliest.” Jones has been a key special teams contributor the last two seasons.
