Trent Steelman update

Army quarterback Trent Steelman suffered a high left ankle sprain in the second quarter of a 44-21 loss at Vanderbilt Saturday, the Times Herald-Record has learned.

Steelman did not return to action and was on crutches in the second half. It’s not clear whether Steelman will make his academy-record 33rd straight start under center against Fordham Saturday. Knowing Steelman’s toughness, he’ll do everything he can to play. He’s played through broken ribs, a torn labrum and turf toe in the past.

But will coach Rich Ellerson chose to rest Steelman when Army hosts Fordham at Michie Stadium Saturday. The Black Knights play at Air Force next week with the Commander in Chief’s trophy on the line.

Army’s first depth chart of the week lists senior Max Jenkins and freshman Angel Santiago as co-starters.

When I asked Ellerson after the Vanderbilt game if he would Steelman out against Fordham, a Football Championship Series (Division I-AA) team and he said, “I don’t think that’s an issue.”
