Nov. 28 practice blog

Army starting quarterback Trent Steelman’s status is still somewhat in question for Navy on Dec. 10.

Steelman dressed, threw a few short passes but didn’t line up under center Monday. The junior injured his right knee two plays into Army’s 42-14 loss to Temple on Nov. 19.

It’s a good sign that Steelman dressed for practice.

Army coach Rich Ellerson said he wants to make a decision on his quarterback by Thursday.

“Trent is one of the bubble guys,” Ellerson said. “We are hoping, maybe the second half of the week… My hopeis we are going to trot out there and Trent will get all the rust off Thursday and Friday and then come back on Sunday and be the guy.”

My guess is Steelman will do everything in his power to play.

Senior Max Jenkins and freshman Angel Santiago split the quarterback reps.

Freshman defensive back Hayden Pierce, a starter, wore a “no-contact” jersey but he was running through plays with the first team. Junior starting defensive end Zach Watts was “limited” but also practiced with the first team. Watts was injured early in the Temple game and didn’t return.

Freshman slotback Terry Baggett, sophomore wide receiver E.J. Tucker, sophomore linebacker Justin Trimble, sophomore Hayden Tippett, freshman slotback Stephen Fraser were all “limited.”

Tucker caught three touchdowns passes from Angel Santiago in Army vs. Army scrimmages against the second-team defense.

Some Army players tested out desert-colored cleats, which it will wear as part of Nike Pro Combat uniforms for the Navy game.

Sophomore kicker Billy Fisher closed the practice with a 42-yard field goal.

Senior left tackle Brad Kelly, who has been banged up and hasn’t started since Miami (Ohio) game on Oct. 8, was practicing with the first team.

Scout-team linebacker LaTarrance Young made a nice interception off a tipped pass near the sideline.

Freshman linebacker Michael Cermak continues to work with the first team. Sophomore guard Andrew Szott is getting some second-team reps.
