2012 spring practice roster

Army’s defensive line may be bolster by the return of sophomore Bobby Kough.

Army coach Rich Ellerson has always spoke highly of Kough, who is 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds and listed at defensive end. Kough was plagued by injury his freshman season and sat out last season.

Junior defensive end Jarrett Mackey, the team’s legacy captain, will be limited in practice but his vocal presence with the team will be as important as his reps. Mackey suffered a season-ending knee injury in Army’s 2011 opener at Northern Illinois.

Junior linebacker Nate Combs will also be limited at best following shoulder surgery and freshman defensive end Joe Drummond is expected to miss the spring (shoulder).

Ellerson said junior quarterback Trent Steelman, a three-year starter, will get a lot of reps. Sophomores Cody Jackson and Parker Hite and freshmen Angel Santiago and Gino DeBartolo are the other quarterbacks on the roster. Freshman Collin Downs isn’t listed on the roster.

Juniors Brian Cobbs (cornerback), Shola Mustapha (defensive end) and Parker Whitten (defensive tackle/long snapper) aren’t listed on the roster.

Cobbs, who started five games at slotback and rushed for 302 yards and five touchdowns as a sophomore, was moved to cornerback early last season and saw reserve time. He was a regular special teams player as a junior. Mustapha, a reserve defensive end, played in three games, making one tackle. Whitten was injured and played just one game. There’s a possibility that Whitten is taking the semester off.

No major position changes as of yet.

Sophomore linebackers Ryan McCollum and Alfred Fields have returned to the team.

Number changes: Sophomore slotback Jon Crucitti (36 to 13); freshman safety Hayden Pierce (30 to 9); freshman quarterback Angel Santiago (3 to 5); sophomore wide receiver E.J. Tucker (86 to 33); sophomore defensive tackle Holt Zalneraitis (88 to 45).
