Sept. 18 practice blog

The team conducted practice inside the Foley Athletic Center because of  downpours outside.

Some shuffling in the secondary. Freshman Chris Carnegie and sophomore Marques Avery were running as first-team cornerbacks. Avery could make his college debut Saturday at Wake Forest. Senior starting cornerback¬† Josh Jackson dressed but didn’t participate in defensive team drills.

Sophomore strong safety Hayden Pierce has returned to the first team after battling a shoulder injury.

Carnegie was one of three freshmen working with the first-team defense. Brandon Fusilier-Jeffires was at free safety and Alex Meier was playing rover.

Junior captain and defensive end Jarrett Mackey saw more work with the first unit. Could Mackey, who is returning from an ACL injury, make his season debut Saturday?

Junior running back Raymond Maples was in a non-contact jersey. Sophomore running back Terry Baggett, a starter who was limited to the first series due to injury last week against Northern Illinois, didn’t practice. But, sophomore running back Trenton Turrentine, who missed most of training camp and the first two weeks with a hand injury, practiced fully and looks ready to make his season debut.

Senior starting defensive end Zach Watts (ankle) didn’t practice due to injury.
