Oct. 9 practice blog

Seven Army players wore black Ranger helmets, which note perfect effort, for their performance in Army’s 34-31 win over Boston College Saturday. Center Will Wilson and tackle Momo Kime were the Ranger award winners on offense. LB Nate Combs, DE Zach Watts, Rover Alex Meier, CB Marques Avery and S Thomas Holloway were chosen on defense.

Sophomore center Ryan Powis was working with the first team. Powis has missed the last two games with a groin injury.

Senior cornerback Josh Jackson (groin), who has started 25 games in his career, practiced. Army co-defensive coordinator Chris Smeland said Jackson will be available for Saturday’s home game against Kent State. Jackson had an interception, which bounced off a scout-team receiver, in practice.

Smeland also said freshman safety Brandon Fusilier-Jeffires (concussion) is expected to return to action.

Sophomore running back Stephen Fraser, who was injured on a kickoff return in the first quarter, practiced.

Sophomore Trenton Turrentine took first-team reps. Senior running back Malcolm Brown, sophomore safety Hayden Pierce and senior safety Ty Shrader didn’t practice.

Senior Jared Hassin took some snaps at fullback.

Former Army punter/kicker Owen Tolson visited practice. Tolson, who was in attendance for Army’s victory Saturday, talked with the kickers, punters and long snappers for most of practice. The 2008 West Point graduate just finished up at Ft. Sill, Okla. and is heading to Japan for three years of service.
