Junior quarterback Angel Santiago solidified his position as Army’s No. 1 quarterback with a sharp scrimmage.
Santiago had two runs of more than 30 yards and hit freshman wide receiver Xavier Moss with a 43-yard touchdown pass.
Santiago said after the scrimmage that the touchdown pass to Moss definitely shows his growth as a quarterback. Known more for his running, Santiago, if he starts, will need to keep defenses honest with the pass.
“This year we have a very strong balance between the run and pass,” said Santiago, who weighs 195 pounds up from 188 last year. “I think we are a lot more confident in the passing game. Our running game is going to be there regardless. That’s what we do. I’m really excited about how this (offense) is going to turn out.”

Moving on up: Freshman Steven Johnson, a 2011 Newburgh Free Academy graduate, was running with the second-team defense at cornerback. Freshman Lofi Tamasese appears to be entrenched as Army’s No. 2 center behind two-year starter Ryan Powis. Junior Todd McDonald, who was Army’s top center in the spring when Powis was injured, continues to work at left tackle.
Quotes: Coach Rich Ellerson had high praise for freshman WR Xavier Moss and freshman cornerback Josh Jenkins. Both Moss and Jenkins are running with the first team. “If you would have brought them in three years ago or 10 years ago, it was going to be hard to keep those two guys off the field. They are pretty gifted.”
Sights and sounds: Sophomore quarterback A.J. Schurr threw a key downfield block on Trenton Turrentine 70-yard TD run… Needed to check Army’s roster and see who No. 23 on offense was. Malcolm Brown graduated in May. This year’s No. 23, Jared Rogers, a sophomore running back, gets to the edge in a hurry… Offensive coordinator Ian Shields calling for a pass-interference penalty on starting cornerback Chris Carnegie against Anthony Stephens in the end zone… Freshman linebacker Caleb Newman dropped quarterback Angel Santiago for a 3-yard loss. Newman, a true freshman who led Lynden (Wash.) High to its second state title last fall, is a player to watch in the future…Freshman quarterback Tevin Long’s wiggle move faked out middle linebacker Tunde Akinniyi near the sideline.
Area of concern?: Depth at “whip” linebacker is concern, coach Rich Ellerson said. Starter James Kelly is battling shoulder and leg injuries. “We need him (Kelly) to be healthy and be out there,” Ellerson said. Senior Jarrett Mackey, who recovered a fumble Sunday, is listed as Kelly’s backup. But, Ellerson said he was impressed with senior Mitch McKearn, a 2010 James I. O’Neill graduate. “He (McKearn) seemed to keep flashing out there,” Ellerson said. “He’s had 10,000 reps. We’ll just see.”
Kicking competition: Sophomore Cale Brewer made all three of his field goals (28, 38, 45 yards). Sophomore Dan Grochowski was good from 25 and 34 yards and missed wide right from 45.
Hudson’s quickness: Freshman defensive lineman Malcolm Hudson was a presence throughout the scrimmage and scout-team work and late Sunday. Hudson, who is listed at 5-foot-10 and 230 pounds, seemed like Army’s quickest lineman off the ball. He ran down quarterback Kelvin White from the other side of the field on one play in the scrimmage. Hudson and Adam Waugh tracked down Julian Crockett on the edge for a short gain. Hudson forced a fumble late. When asked if Hudson is undersized, coach Rich Ellerson said, ” Not really. It depends on where he’s going to end up. Somebody said that’s what Josh McNary looked like when he was a freshman. That would be nice.” McNary, Army’s all-time sack leader, is now playing with the Indianapolis Colts.
