Who will start at QB Saturday

Army coach Rich Ellerson and offensive coordinator Ian Shields will be watching quarterbacks Angel Santiago and A.J. Schurr closely during the next two days of practice.

Ellerson didn’t commit  to junior Angel Santiago, making his third straight start against No. 5 Stanford Saturday at Michie Stadium.

Santiago lost a fumble and threw an interception in a 40-14 loss at Ball State last week. He led Army to a 28-12 victory over Morgan State in the season opener.

“Obviously, we do some things at quarterback that have given us some mistakes,” Ellerson said. “Angel is not the only one we have. A supporting cast contributes to that effort. We can’t play like that. We have two snaps on the ground, a forced fumble and we’re throwing interceptions. We have another mental breakdown (taking a sack in field-goal position) before the half, and then we have another delay of game with A.J. (Schurr) so it’s a team effort there.”

The coach said, he, “liked when A.J.(Schurr, a sophomore)  came in the game (in the fourth quarter) . He can do all of the things that we want at quarterback. I will say what I said in the beginning of the season. Don’t be surprised if you see two quarterbacks.”

Santiago and Schurr, who rushed for 46 yards and passed for 27 yards in two series against Ball State,  will see equal snaps with the first-team offense.

“They will switch back and forth this week,” Ellerson said. “They are both well-practiced football players. They are both guys who know their way around the offense. We need to have the bar much higher for them in terms of their execution. We have to pay attention to practice. Where we are if they are practicing and it’s close, we are going to start Angel. But I’m going to make sure that we pay attention.”
