Spring practice preview: Quarterbacks

Hard to believe on a roster of 103 players that Army will have three quarterbacks take regular snaps when spring practice begins Thursday.

Junior A.J. Schurr, who would be No. 1 on the depth chart, will miss the spring following shoulder surgery.

That leaves sophomore Matt Kaufmann and freshmen Ahmad Bradshaw and Seth Gonzales are the lone quarterbacks.

Bradshaw is one of Army’s players that has the most to gain this spring. He dressed for Army’s first three games of 2014 as the third quarterback. But, Bradshaw missed the rest of the season due to an academy matter.

Bradshaw has gotten stronger in the offseason and he’s probably Army’s best athlete at quarterback. A strong spring could put Bradshaw in position to challenge Schurr for the starting job in the preseason.

Coach Jeff Monken is confident in Kaufmann knowing and running Army’s offense. Kaufmann had a breakthrough performance throwing the football in Army’s spring game last year.

It will be interesting to see how Gonzales develops running the football with more snaps this spring.

Junior tight end Kelvin White, a quarterback his freshman and sophomore seasons before Monken arrived at West Point, will see some occasional snaps in two-minute drills this spring. White has the strongest arm on the roster.
