April 11 scrimmage blog

Army’s second spring scrimmage had ended.

Players broke into their position groups.

When assistant coach Tucker Waugh sent his slotbacks to the locker room, one player remained.

Sophomore Joe Walker, the team’s most experienced slotback, was accepting his penalty for an earlier fumble during the scrimmage.

“When you fumble, you have 200 yards of up-downs, every five yards,” Walker said. “That was my punishment.”

For the second straight Saturday, Army’s offense started off slow against the defense.

“We started out rough,” said Walker, who scored a 10-yard touchdown run late in the scrimmage. “I definitely started out rough during the scrimmage. Just fundamental things, little things that they tell us to focus on every day. It kind of slipped my mind a little bit. I think that’s what we going on with our offense being a little sluggish.

“We picked it up. Coach Monken got into us a little bit and we realized we have to dig down and get it done. Once the offense got going, the offense kind of fed off each other.”

At one point in the practice, coach Jeff Monken laid into both units for not playing at the speed he expected.

“I’m just trying to get them to compete,” Monken said. “It’s awfully important that our football team play as hard as they can play all of the time. If we don’t, we’re not giving ourselves a good chance to win. Sometimes, our guys have those lapses in effort and I’m big on playing to the whistle and not watching and looking around to see if the play has ended. Just keep playing as hard as you can until the official blows the whistle and make him blow the whistle.”

Scrimmage observations: Freshman quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw started the scrimmage with the first-team offense. Sophomore Matt Kaufmann also took a few series with the first team while Bradshaw worked with the second team…Good sign that junior tackle Justin Gilbert saw snaps with the first team. Army has been cautious with Gilbert, who is returning from ACL injury from last August. Gilbert was held out of the first scrimmage last Saturday…Army quarterbacks completed two passes during the scrimmage. Bradshaw’s touchdown pass to Poe came on the final play of the day. Matt Kaufmann found freshman slotback Egbezien Obiomon for 20 yards on a 4th-and-short…Tight end Kelvin White dove but couldn’t come up with pass from Kaufmann in the end zone…

Sophomore fullback Aaron Kemper was a workhorse on one drive, carrying the ball on nine straight plays…The offense converted too many first downs on 4th-and-inches to Monken’s liking… Freshman slotback Christian Reed showcased his speed, turning what could have been a loss into an 8-yard gain…Sophomore defensive end Jordan Smith limped off the field, favoring his left leg and didn’t return…Junior kicker Dan Grochowski missed a 50-yard field goal, which was a difficult kick considering the wind…Freshman Jonathan Kim was short on a 48-yard try…Army seniors Mike Ugenyi, Richard Glover, Geoff Bacon and Tony Giovannelli were on hand to watch the scrimmage…Father Judge (Pa.) junior running back Yeedee Thaenrat and Berks Catholic (Pa.) junior slotback/safety Issac Lutz were among a group of recruits visiting. Senior kicker Zach Potter, a commit from Terre Haute, Ind., also attended the scrimmage.
