Eastern Michigan week: Jeff Monken presser

Some takeaways from Tuesday’s press conference and practice:

Army coach Jeff Monken said numerous times during his press conference how impressed he was with Eastern Michigan (1-2).

Monken said the status of Toth and sophomore guard Jaryn Villegas, Army’s starting right side of the offensive line, is uncertain heading into the game Saturday. Toth and Villegas missed the Wake Forest game last week with ankle injuries.

Monken said freshman tackle Rick Kurz had a, “good football game” for a first start and freshman guard Victor Nieves, who also made his first start, “is improving.” Nieves entered Army Prep at 360 pounds last fall. He’s down to 305 pounds. “I’m amazed at how much he has transformed his body and the change he has made since starting here,” Monken said…”I think he will continue to get better as he plays.”

Quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw stayed after practice to work on his footwork. Bradshaw said he wanted to make sure his steps are right down to the inch to avoid any issues with the fullbacks and the mesh.

Freshman outside linebacker Kenneth Brinson, who recorded his first college sack against Wake Forest Satuday, was working with Jovan Dewitt, his position coach, after practice.

Freshman cornerbacker Brandon Jackson picked up where he left off Saturday, intercepting a pass in practice.
