Penn State week: Jeff Monken presser

Quick takeaways from Army coach Jeff Monken’s press conference

Sophomore starting quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw’s status for the Penn State game is still to be determined. Bradshaw has been getting treatments on his ankle, which he hurt in the second quarter of Army’s 58-36 win over Eastern Michigan Saturday. The hope was to have Bradshaw practice some on Tuesday but that was pending on how his ankle responded to treatment before practice.

“We are hopeful that he will be healthy and ready to play on Saturday,” Monken said. “Right now, we don’t know.”

Senior offensive lineman Justin Gilbert is questionable for the Penn State. Gilbert was hurt on the first play of the second half against Eastern Michigan and did not return. Monken said he’s not sure if Gilbert will be ready to play Saturday.

If Gilbert can’t play, sophomore Mike Houghton and freshman Victor Nieves will likely be the starting guards.

Looks like Army will be with a fullback-by-committee again Saturday. Army played Aaron Kemper, Matt Giachinta, Drue Harris and Darnell Woolfolk at the position, which gained 295 yards against Eastern Michigan. Kemper led fullbacks with 140 yards.

“I think all those guys are doing some really good things, good enough at this point that I don’t want to keep them on the bench all day and say, ‘Ok, this guy is going to get all the carries,'” Monken said. “Aaron (Kemper) has done some nice things, he really has, but there are things that each one of those guys does better than the rest of the group that gives us merit to playing all of them right now.”
