Recruiting: Army Wright choice for Georgia LB

Markus Wright was on the edge of his seat.

Wright was hoping for a close game. Army gave Wright more against Navy last month. The Black Knights, a 22-point underdog, nearly knocked off Navy as a Hail Mary dropped in the end zone  as time expired.

“I finished (watching the game by throwing my phone),” said Wright, a senior linebacker at Jordan High in Columbus, Ga. “I wanted a good game. I got a good game. It would have been cool to see Army break that streak.”

Army has now dropped 14 straight games to Navy.

Wright vows to be part of an Army team that turns the streak around. The former California commit joined Army’s 2016 class Tuesday when coach Jeff Monken, defensive coordinator Jay Bateman and quarterbacks coach Mitch Ware paid Wright a home visit. Wright chose Army over Navy.

“Everyone is excited, the coaching staff, all the recruits and all of the commits,” Wright said. “Everyone is just really excited about what we have going on there and we’re pumped up for a good future…

“I can guarantee you the streak is going to get broken and we are going to start one on our side.”

ESPN recruiting ranks the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Wright the 122nd-best linebacker in the class of 2016 and the 147th-best player in Georgia. He is being recruited as an outside linebacker but also has the flexibility to play inside.

Wright took his official visit to Army on the weekend of January 8-10 and visited Navy the following weekend.

“If I graduated from (California), I still would have to compete in the job world and find my place in the world,” Wright said of his decommitment from California. “At West Point, I’m set and have a pretty straight future.”

In other recruiting news, Mill Creek (Ga.) defensive end Tyler Vernon announced on social media Thursday that he was decommitting from Army. Soon after, Vernon tweets he will play for Georgia Tech and Paul Johnson. Johnson was Army coach Jeff Monken’s mentor at Navy and Georgia Tech.
