Defense film breakdown: Temple

Eight of Army’s defensive starters played all 54 snaps in a 28-13 win at Temple Friday.

Army’s secondary of cornerbacks Brandon Jackson and Marcus Hyatt and safeties Rhyan England and Xavier Moss went the distance along with defensive end John Voit and linebackers Kenneth Brinson, Andrew King and Jeremy Timpf.

Timpf started his team-leading 25th straight game. Timpf’s eight tackles moved him into 27th place all-time (217).

Junior nose tackle Andrew McLean and senior defensive end Eddy Ruzga made their first career starts.

The Black Knights played five reserves. Junior linebacker Alex Aukerman, a returning starter, didn’t play on the defense’s first snap but saw action in 42 plays and led the team with three tackles for a loss and two sacks.

During some passing situations, Army used just one defensive lineman (Voit) and a bunch of linebackers and defensive backs including Calen Holt and Mike Reynolds. Reynolds, a sophomore cornerback playing in his first career game, picked off his first career pass in the fourth quarter.

Brinson and Hyatt also had their first career interceptions.

Army held Temple to just three runs of 10 or more yards over 28 carries. Temple quarterback Phillip Walker was just 4-of-13 for 59 yards in the second half and threw two fourth-quarter interceptions. The Black Knights held Temple to two field goals in the game’s final 44 minutes and 28 seconds.
