Watch list: Aukerman up for Nagurski Trophy

Alex Aukerman’s 2014 high school recruiting profiles listed the Indiana native between 205 and 210 pounds.

This week, the Army senior posted a picture of a scale reading 262 pounds on social media.

Aukerman has become one of the football team’s strongest and effective players. Army’s leader on tackles for loss (15) and sacks (7.5) was recognized as one of the country’s top defensive players earlier this week. Aukerman was one of 103 players named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list.

The award is given annually to the nation’s best defensive players. Among the recent winners are Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly (Boston Colllege, 2011), Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald (Pittsburgh, 2013) and Redskins’ 2017 first-round draft pick Jonathan Allen (Alabama, 2016).

Recruited to play safety out of Center Grove High, coordinator Jay Bateman used Aukerman in a variety of positions in 2016 as Army finished fourth in the country in total defense. Aukerman played rush linebacker, defensive end and even lined up as a nose tackle.

Aukerman was third on the team with 59 tackles, including eight in Army’s Heart of Dallas Bowl win over North Texas, and recorded two-sack games against Duke and Temple as a junior.
