Prediction time: San Diego State

Army is a 6.5-point underdog to San Diego State in the Armed Forces Bowl.

San Diego State (10-2) is seeking its third straight 11-win season.

Army (9-3) looks to become the second team in the academy’s 127-year history to win 10 games in a season.

Keys to the game are simple for the Black Knights – run the ball effectively, win time of possession and finish drives with touchdowns on offense and contain/slow down San Diego State first-team all-American running back Rashaad Penny on defense.

San Diego State is 10-0 when Penny rushes for more than 100 yards. The Aztecs are 0-2 when Penny gained 99 yards or less.

The Black Knights are seeking the program’s third straight bowl win in Texas.

Quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw, fifth in the nation in rushing, needs 22 yards to break Napoleon McCallum’s single-season service-academy rushing record of 1,587 for Navy in 1983.

Sal Interdonato (Times Herald-Record Army football beat writer): Army 31, San Diego State 28: Sticking with my prediction from my spot on “Crawdad’s Countdown to Kickoff.” This game will be competitive in the fourth quarter if Army can limit San Diego State’s possessions and keep Penny, the nation’s leading rusher, on the sidelines. Army coach Jeff Monken said the offense has scaled down its playbook to prepare against San Diego State’s different defensive looks. If that’s the case, expect a lot of running between the tackles from Bradshaw and fullbacks Darnell Woolfolk and Andy Davidson.
