Three-year starter Rick Kurz departs West Point

Three-year starting left tackle Rick Kurz will not return for his senior season.

Kurz, who started 27 games including 10 as a junior, confirmed his departure from West Point in a statement to the Times Herald-Record.

“I had to make one of the harder decisions I’ll ever make in January due to my inconsistent performance academically during the football season,” Kurz said. “This decision has led me to pursue my degree elsewhere.  I am thankful for being a small part of the success Army has had in my three years at West Point.  I will miss the coaches, trainers, my brothers in arms and beating Navy again in 2018.  Go Army!”

Competition to replace Army’s three graduating senior offensive linemen was expected to be one of the most closely-watched battles of spring practice. Kurz’s departure leaves senior center Bryce Holland is lone returning starter from an offensive line, which helped Army lead the nation in rushing in 2017. Senior tackle Brett Toth, an NFL prospect and senior guard Mike Houghton were three-year starters. Senior guard Josh Boylan was one of the team’s most improved and consistent players last season.
Junior Austin Schuffert and sophomores Jaxson Deaton and Mike Johnson, who missed the 2017 season with a knee injury, have previous experience as starters. Schuffert started in place of Kurz, who battled through injuries his junior year, at Air Force in November.
