Defense breakdown: Liberty

Linebackers Cole Christiansen and James Nachtigal played all 60 snaps in a 38-14 home-opening win over Liberty.

Defensive coordinator Jay Bateman moved outside linebacker Kenneth Brinson inside to a standing position over center in some passing situations. Brinson made five tackles after no stops in Army’s season opener at Duke.

Cornerback Elijah Riley played at a high level against 6-foot-4, 220-pound wide receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden. Golden, an NFL prospect, caught just one pass for three with Riley in coverage.

Army’s three forced turnovers were its most since six at Rice on Oct. 7, 2017.

 

 

Turnovers created: 3. Interceptions (1): Jaylon McClinton, fourth quarter. Fumbles forced (2): Jaylon McClinton, first quarter, Chris Skyers, fourth quarter.

Third-down defense: Liberty converted on 5-of-12 chances.

Defensive penalties: 3. (Chandler Ramirez, block below waist on return, James Nachtigal, personal foul, Elijah Riley, pass interference)

Liberty starting field position: Liberty 21. Liberty did not start a drive past its own 25.
