Lambert Trophy champions

Army will have to make some room in its football offices or Sports Hall of Fame for some more hardware.

The Black Knights will receive the Lambert Trophy as the best Division I-A football team in the East at the Eastern College Football Awards banquet on Feb. 21 in Danbury, Conn.

Army, which set an academy record with 11 wins and finished 19th in the Associated Press poll, earned its first Lambert Trophy since 1958.

“What an honor for the 2018 Black Knights to join the other great teams that have been awarded the Lambert Trophy!” Army coach Jeff Monken posted on Twitter Tuesday.

Athletic director Boo Corrigan said on Army earning the Lambert Trophy, “You always try to look inside on what we’re doing and if we’re doing it the right way and if you got the right people involved. If you are recognized outside, I think it’s a nice outward facing piece to what it is. I’m honored that they would consider us for the award.”

Army finished the season with a nine-game winning streak and capped off the academy’s winningiest campaign with a 70-14 victory over Houston in the Armed Forces Bowl.
