Recruiting: Kaghen Roach discusses his Army commitment

Celina (Texas) defensive end Kaghen Roach had a special guest over for dinner Monday night.

Army coach Jeff Monken paid Roach an in-home visit. Near the end of the night, Monken asked Roach if he knew what his college decision was going to be. Roach committed to Monken and Army in front of his family.

“Honestly, I couldn’t be more proud and more honored,” said Roach, who is 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds. “To get to say I get to play for one of the most prolific teams in college and the Army and what I have coming in the future, it’s an honor and a blessing.”

Roach earned all-state Class 4-A first-team honors for the second straight season as a senior with 65 tackles, 22 for a loss, 12 sacks, three interceptions, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and a blocked kick. He was first-team, all-state as made the all-state as a junior. Roach’s primary position was defensive end. But, he also played outside linebacker, defensive tackle and nose guard. Army is recruiting Roach to play its hybrid defensive end/linebacker position.

Army was one of Roach’s earliest offers. He attended Army’s 2018 spring game in April. Roach took his official visit to West Point for the Air Force game on Nov. 3.

“It was special,” said Roach of Army’s 17-14 win over Air Force. “That game is what raised my interest. Just seeing the tradition and everything that comes along with those types of games, it was awesome.”

Roach, who had an offer from Air Force, is excited for Army’s future schedule, which includes Michigan at the Big House in, Oklahoma in 2020, Wisconsin in 2021 and Tennessee in 2022.

“I’ve always grown up an OU fan,” said Roach, who played in the Blue-Grey All-American game. “If I can’t play for them, I’d rather put a beatdown on them.”

Army added another hybrid defensive end/linebacker commit earlier this week in Cheshire Academy’s Andre Carter, who is 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds. Carter chose Army over Air Force.

“I was looking for a school with a great academic program as well as a great football program and Army was the best option for that,” Carter said. “I just really liked coach Monken and (defensive coordinator John) Loose.”

Valley (West Des Moines, Iowa) quarterback Beau Lombardi recently joined Army’s 2019 class. Lombardi received an offer from Army on Jan. 24 and announced his commitment  to the Black Knights on Jan. 28.

Coronado (Texas) linebacker Trey Stephens announced his commitment to Army Monday. Stephens made more than 500 tackles in his career.
