Cam Thomas transfers to Jacksonville University

Cam Thomas, Army’s No. 2 quarterback in 2018, will continue operating the triple option at his next college football home. Thomas, a sophomore, announced Wednesday that he will transfer to Division I-AA Jacksonville University in the fall. Thomas’ offensive coordinator at Jacksonville will be none other than Trent Steelman, Army’s all-time leader in rushing touchdowns (45) and rushing yards (3,320) for a quarterback. Ian Shields, Army’s offensive coordinator under Rich Ellerson from 2009-13, is Jacksonville’s head coach. Thomas proved to be a more than serviceable backup to Kelvin Hopkins in 2018. He rushed for 306 yards and three touchdowns in eight games for the Black Knights including a 31-30 double-overtime win over Miami (Ohio) in his only career start. Thomas rushed for a career-high 137 yards against Miami and threw his first career touchdown pass, 15 yards to Jordan Asberry in Army’s 70-14 Armed Forces Bowl victory over Houston. Thomas posted that he was leaving Army in January. Sophomore Christian Anderson and freshmen Jabari Laws and Tyhier Tyler continue to compete in spring practice for the vacancy left by Thomas. Jacksonville has become a destination for former Army coaches, players and commits. Tom Simi, Army’s offensive line coach in 2013 and the head coach at Army Prep from 2009-12, is Jacksonville’s offensive line coach. Wade Green, who coached defense at Army Prep from 2009-17, is Jacksonville’s defensive line coach. Former Army offensive lineman Lofi Tamasese is a graduate assistant. Fullback Garnett Nicolas and slotback Nasser Clark, who will be sophomores, were Army commits, who played at Army Prep in 2017.
