Recruiting: Virginia LB Rameau commits to Army

LucRichard Rameau’s week started with some tough news after he learned his senior football season at Episcopal (Va.) High School was cancelled due to the coronavirus.

Rameau believes his decision Wednesday could make up for the loss.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker called Army assistant Keith Gaither with his verbal commitment to the Black Knights.

“There were a lot of schools that were recruiting me but I just wanted to commit to Army because of the way they’ve treated me throughout the recruiting process and the fact that I lost my senior season,” said Rameau, who announced his commitment Thursday. “Maybe, it (his season being cancelled) is for the best.”

Rameau played inside linebacker at Episcopal but has the flexibility to play outside linebacker or a stand-up defensive end for the Black Knights.

Army believes it has added a player with unlimited potential in Rameau. He’s played just two seasons of organized football. Basketball was Rameau’s main sport. His mother thought football was too dangerous to play. Rameau convinced his mother to play football due to the potential for scholarships.

“Army feels like my upside in through the roof,” said Rameau, who made 50 tackles as a junior.

Rameau committed to Army while sitting at a table with his parents around him. He will be the first member of his family to play Division I sports.

“I just felt a relief go off my back when I committed and I really felt like I was going to be a part of a family, the brotherhood,” Rameau said.

“I love all of the coaches and what they stand for and how they recruited me in the process. All the benefits I get after I serve is a lifetime opportunity.”

Darien Langley is the first California commit of Army’s 2021 class. The 5-foot-8, 165-pound St. Joseph’s (Santa Maria) rising senior could play running back and receiver at Army. Langley, one of the top sprinters in his area, also possesses the speed to return kicks.

“I loved the brotherhood they have going on there,” Langley said. “I also love the idea of being able to serve my country after I’m done with school. It was the right choice because it’s balance of big-time football and high-level education.”

Army was the first offer for Langley, who committed Monday.
