Recruiting: Florida DB Jackson selects Army

Cookouts on Army-Navy football day have become a tradition in Terrell Jackson’s family.

Jackson would enjoy the game and not pick a side with family members that are serving or have served on both side of the rivalry.

The Trinity Christian (Fla.) defensive back chose a side Thursday, committing to Army. Navy offered Jackson first.

“I always just thought that would be a great place to go,” Jackson said. Both of Jackson’s parents have a Navy background. “You get a top-notch education and also helping your career outside of sports.

“I talked to my family and my mom was all down for it. She loves the thought of me going to a school like that where I can get a great education and play football at the same time. I always keyed in on Army but I never chose to commit. But after talking to me mom and dad about it, it was like, “Yeah, it’s time.”

Jackson said Daryl Dixon, his recruiting coach and Army’s cornerback coach, played an important role in his decision. Dixon first reached out to Jackson in April and few days later offered the 6-foot-1, 182-pound versatile defender. Jackson played safety, cornerback and nickel corner in his first season at Trinity Christian as a junior.

“Coach Dixon was a family-friendly type of guy,” Jackson said. “He would talk to my parents and be open with things. He was just a cool guy to talk to. It’s not like you were talking to a coach. You were talking to a friend. That just made it easier.”

Jackson’s parents did not object to his college decision despite their ties to Navy.

“They just want me to feel comfortable and make sure I feel at home at a school that can better me as a person for the future,” said Jackson, who had 42 tackles and three interceptions in 2019.
