Recruiting: North Carolina LB Banks commits to Army

There wasn’t a specific moment when Josiah Banks knew Army was the school for the Mount Tabor (N.C.) linebacker but a collection of moments.

Banks built a strong relationship with Army’s coaching staff including his recruiter Keith Gaither and learned the benefits of playing Division I football with West Point’s education.

Army was in Banks’ Final Four with Air Force, Yale and Lafayette. He made the call Tuesday, giving the Black Knights his verbal commitment.

“I knew that Army was the right decision for me because of the principles of brotherhood and community that are instilled in the program as well as the school,” said Banks, who had 130 tackles as a junior. “Also, I want to challenge myself in the classroom and also on the football field and there is no better place to do such than West Point.”

Banks, who has a 4.1 grade-point average, was recruited by Ivy Schools Harvard, Penn and Dartmouth and also received interest from hometown Wake Forest and Georgia Southern.

Army is recruiting the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Banks as an outside linebacker.

“I love the program and what it’s stands for and can’t wait to see the excellence that they put out this year,” Banks said. “Also, I think the future is very bright as my 2021 recruiting class is filling up some great talent.”

Among the talent is Long Beach Poly (Calif.) defensive tackle Jacob Tuioti, who also announced his Army commitment Tuesday. Tuioti, who is 6-foot-2 and 250 pounds, made 61 tackles, 22 for a loss and 10 sacks as a junior. He received offered from Colorado State, Nevada and UNLV.

Army’s pipeline to Buford (Ga.) High continued with the commitment of junior tackle Jacob Smith. Smith wasted little time in making his college decision. He announced an offer from Army on July 15 and revealed his commitment four days later. Smith’s first offer was from Maryland of the Big Ten. He was also offered by Akron, East Carolina, South Alabama and Charlotte.
